Forge Making

This one day course will have you making your own gas fired forge and venturi burner.  The forge will get you well truly and started on your future blacksmithing projects. The forge is portable, needs no electricity and runs of a standard 9kg BBQ gas bottle. Welding heat is reached in about 10 minutes and larger pieces can be forged by opening the back door. Perfect for knifemaking, tool making, damascus steel making and decorative blacksmithing. It can also be used for basic heat treating.

It has a maximum of four students only.

Students will be working as a team to make the forges as we divide up the production stages. Welding and metalwork skills will be a bonus to the group, but not essential. as everyone will have an opportunity to contribute and learn.

The day will include

  • body design and construction
  • door design
  • venturi burners
  • lining and heat insulation
  • painting and finishing
  • safety considerations when using a forge

Please make sure you have some way of bring the forge home with you (not recommended for carry on luggage!). It weighs about 20kg.

 

  • Cost - $880 (incl GST)
  • Cost includes: Completed forge and burner, tuition, insurance, materials, use of tools, workshop consumables, safety gear, morning and afternoon tea.
  • Need to bring: Lunch, appropriate clothing and covered footwear
  • Booking in advance is essential - very limited places
