Term Definition
AnvilShaped surface of heavy steel on which hot metal is hammered
 
Ball-peen hammerHammer with a rounded-back face
 
BoraxSubstance used as welding fluxto seal out oxygen, which forms scale
 
Carbon contentAmount or degree of carbon in steel.
 
Carbon SteelSteel that has enough carbon content to harden for use as tools. Usuall between 0.5% and 0.9%.
 
Draw a piece of ironTo flatten, extend by heating and hammering; to stretch
 
Drift outTo enlarge, as a hole
 
Forge WeldTo join iron/steel by hammering while white hot
 
Heat TreatingCombination of hardening and tempering steels and other metals.
 
NormalizeTo cool a heated metal in the air to its normal hardness. Often slowly.
 
Spring steelSteel of high carbon content used for springs.
 
TemperTo regulate hardness in metal by controlled heating.
 
UpsetTo thicken by hammering into a mass, as opposed to strtching or drawing out.
