The Tree Project
On Saturday 7 February 2009, the State of
Victoria, Australia experienced the worst natural disaster in the
country’s history— a raging fire so fast and so severe that many people
were unable to get out of its path. Over 200 people have perished, 7000
are homeless, townships are destroyed and the grief in the affected
communities is overwhelming.
To remember the people lost to the fires and our brave CFA
men and women who battled the elements to protect our towns, the
Australian Blacksmiths Association (Victoria) Inc. is inviting
blacksmiths from across the country and around the world to contribute
to The Tree Project. We are asking you, our fellow ‘smiths to
contribute, not monetarily, but to help us to grow a tree from our
forges and fires. We ask that you forge a gum leaf from stainless steel
or copper to be added to a forged gumtree. This gumtree is to be
erected in one of the affected townships as a memorial of these events,
for the loss suffered and for the spirit of renewal.
The Australian Knifemakers Guild web site will be hosting a virtual knife show from August 1 2007 until August 21. Knives will be offered for sale by members of the Guild from 10am (AEST GMT +10) on August 1. Interested buyers are asked to contact the members directly to arrange the sale. Knives that are sold will be marked sold but left for display during the knife show.
Pass the word along.
New Blacksmithing Book
The General Blacksmith by Malcolm Paine has just been released in Western Australia and I can truly recommend it to any knife maker thinking of turning to the dark side and forging blades.
The Australian Knifemakers Guild aims to promote, preserve and develop the craft of knifemaking and all its various disciplines to the highest standard possible. Members regularly meet at knife shows to share ideas and inspiration on their latest creation.
Joining the guild is a great way to improve your skills and networks as a custom knifemaker. Probationary members must meet certain standards of fit and finish on their blades before being accepted as full members.
Grab a couple of mates and give Karim a call on 02 6235 5622 to arrange something that does fit with you. Minimum numbers for a custom course depends on the course - 3 for Bladsmithing and Knifemaking, 2 for Damascus, 4 for Father and Son Blacksmithing, 4 for Sharpening. Prices are the same as the other courses.
High carbon steel for bladesmithing. Excellent for forging and heat treating. The steel works well under the hammer and the size is perfect for a range of small to medium blade. This is a simple steel that is oil quenched and shows hamon lines very clearly when heat treated correctly. Perfect for Japanese style blades. You should get between 4 and 6 blades per length. 15N20 is the same as 1075 with an additional 2% nickel. It makes a high contrast pattern when combined with either 1075 or 1055 in Damascus steel.
1055 - 4mm x 25mm x 530mm (annealed) 400g - $10 per length
1075 - 3mm x 25mm x 450mm (spring tempered) 250g - $15 per length
