Forging Blades (Intermediate) PDF Print E-mail

This one day workshop further develops skills in forging blades. The emphasis is on improving skills through practice. Each participant will have an opportunity to forge a number of blades of diffeing sizes and shapes. Typically each participant will make 5 - 6 blades during the course, depending on individual skill and speed.

Course runs from 9am until 3:30pm. Please bring your lunch. Cost $200 

 

The focus is on forging techniques. Topics included will be

  • steel temperature guide
  • forming points
  • forging ricassos
  • edge work
  • Forging tangs
  • edge packing
  • straightening
  • annealing
  • correcting mistakes
  • making curves in blades
  • off centre tangs

No knives will be completed in the day, rather a number of blades will be forged and annealed, for finishing at a later time.

All steel, safety equipment  and workshop is supplied. Previous experience in knifemaking is essential, either through a basic course run by the Tharwa Valley Forge or other similar experience.
