Tharwa Valley Forge is an accredited school with the American Bladesmith Society. We are only one of two schools outside of the US to be accredited. These classes are run by ABS Mastersmiths.
Tharwa Valley Forge is proud to host the American Bladesmith Society’s Introduction to Bladesmithing course. This intensive, 8 day, hands-on workshop is perfect for anyone eager to learn the foundational techniques of bladesmithing, guided by some of the most accomplished Mastersmiths in the craft.
About the Course
The Introduction to Bladesmithing course is comprehensive 8 day course where participants will:
- Learn about Metal selection, function, and different blade designs.
- Explore the properties of steel and how to manipulate them for optimal performance.
- Learn the fundamental techniques of forging to shape, annealing, grinding, heat treating, tempering and finishing a blade.
- These semi-finished blades will be tested for their cutting ability, edge holding, hardness and flexibility.
Most participants should be able to make a blade that is capable of passing the American Bladesmith Society Journeyman test for cutting and bending by the end of this course.
The ABS Journeyman practical test
- Cut freehanging 1" manilla rope is one slice
- Cut through two 4" x 2" pieces of timber and be able to shave hair afterwards
- Place in a vice and bed though 90 degrees without snapping the blade.
This course takes a year off the 3 year wait time for the ABS Journemany level. You will need to register with the ABS as an apprentice before the course starts to be eligible.
