It is hard to hold hot metal with your bare hands. That is why tongs are an important part of any blacksmith's toolkit. This one day course will cover tong construction techniques as you make three pairs for your tool kit.
You will make three pairs of tongs - flat jaw tongs, bolt tongs and a design of your choosing.
The course runs from 8am until 5pm.
This workshop covers
- Selecting steel stock
- Making the boss
- Tong jaws
- Drawing out the reins
- Punching and riveting holes
Tongs will be made both by hand and with powered tools (as your arms get tired). By the end of the day you will be confident and competent to make you own tongs to suit your work. You can never have too many tongs.
You will need some experience in hammering hot metal to do this class - doing the Introduction to Blacksmithing course or having equivalent experience will be very helpful.
