Leather Sheathmaking Introduction

Learn how to make leather sheaths at home using inexpensive tools. During this short one-day course you'll make two leather sheaths for two of your own knives that you bring with you.

The skills you'll learn will not only allow you to make sheaths - they'll also get you started with a broad range of entry-level leatherworking projects. We'll also fill you in on the best places to source leather, fittings, patterns, and tools. Importantly, you'll also have the opportunity to talk to an experienced teacher about setting up to make sheaths at home.

The day starts with a discussion of different types of sheaths, before focussing on the specifics of single piece sheaths. We'll then talk about a wide range of leatherwork techniques including embellishment, stitching, and finishing, as well as basic leather care.

Next, you'll choose the pattern for your sheaths then cut out and prepare your leather. Punching holes, bevelling and burnishing edges will get the sheath read for assembly. The sheath is then dyed. Then it's time to get hand sewing. Once you've finished the first round of stitches and your belt loop is attached, the sheath is moulded and shaped over the knife before the final round of stitching. The leather is then sealed and waxed to finish.

This short one-day class runs from 9am until 3pm - Please bring two knives you'd like to make the sheathes for. Please make sure the knives you bring meet the follwing criteria:

• Outdoor knife or similar (This style of sheath is not suitable for kitchen knives)
• Maximum 150mm blade length
• Maximum 40mm blade width

Cost - $350 (incl GST) 
Cost includes leather, dyes, equipment use and instruction to make two custom moulded leather sheaths. 
Booking in advance is essential - very limited places. 
Bring your own lunch (we have a fridge and microwave), make sure long hair is tied back, please wear enclosed footwear and workshop appropriate clothing.
