The Hammer is the Smith's number one tool, used in almost every aspect of the craft. This one day course will cover hammer making techniques as you make a rounding hammer head and learn to handle it.
You will make rounding hammer head - one face for spreading metal and one face for flattening metal.
This workshop covers
- Selecting steel stock
- Marking the eye
- Punching and drifting the eye
- Shaping the hammer faces and cheeks
- Heat treatment
- Handle fitting
Hammers will be made both by hand and with powered tools (as your arms get tired). By the end of the day you will be confident and competent to make you own hammers.
You will need some experience in hammering hot metal to do this class - doing the Introduction to Blacksmithing course or having equivalent experience will be very helpful.
