5160 is a high carbon steel and some care is needed to prevent rust.
Following these steps will help maintain the condition and longevity of your hammer.
- Cleaning:
- After each use, wipe the hammer with a clean, dry cloth to remove any debris or residue.
- For stubborn dirt, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Dry thoroughly afterward.
- Rust Prevention:
- Apply a thin layer of oil (e.g., mineral oil or machine oil) to the hammerhead to prevent rust.
- Store in a dry place. Consider using a silica gel pack in the storage area to absorb moisture.
- Maintenance:
- Periodically inspect the hammerhead for any signs of wear or damage.
- If the hammerhead becomes dull or nicked, use a fine grit sandpaper or sharpening stone to smooth it out.
- Handle Care:
- Ensure the handle is securely attached. Tighten or replace it if necessary.
- If the handle is wooden, periodically apply linseed oil to prevent drying and cracking.
- Storage:
- Store the hammer in a tool rack or toolbox, ensuring it's not in contact with other tools to avoid damage.
- Avoid leaving the hammer in damp or humid environments for extended periods.
